Riverside Turf is a family-owned and operated business committed to growing and supplying premium quality lawns. Our turf is grown on the fertile banks of the James River in Charles City County. Each roll of sod is newly harvested and delivered fresh from our family farm ready for you to use.

Riverside Farm was founded in the early 1900s by John Ludwig Hula, an immigrant from Czechoslovakia. For nearly 100 years John, his son Adolph and his sons Frank and Mickey raised beef cattle and grain on their 2,000-acre farm just minutes from Virginia’s capital city, Richmond.

In the early 2000s when Frank’s son, Wells, attended Virginia Tech, he explored ways to expand the opportunities his family’s farm provided. After ruling out several options, he enrolled in Tech’s Landscape and Turf Management Program, where he learned the latest techniques and best management practices for growing, harvesting and delivering premium sod grass for commercial and residential applications. Wells augmented his education with an internship at a local sod farm in central Virginia, where he learned practical, hands-on techniques for successfully running a turf grass business.

Today, Wells and the rest of the Hula family maintain 300 acres of premium turf type tall fescue on their fourth-generation farm, which has quickly earned a reputation as a reliable supplier of the finest turf grass throughout central Virginia. They are supported by a team of professionals who strive to provide perfect lawns to each of their customers. While the family has adjusted to changing economic and environmental conditions since John Ludwig Hula started Riverside Farm, dedication to producing the highest quality product in an environmentally responsible manner is a family trait passed down through four generations and continues today.
