Step #1 – Call 804.829.2608 For A Free Estimate

Call Riverside Turf for a free estimate. We’ll come out to your site, measure it and present you with a cost estimate based on your individual needs.

Step #2 – Order Your Sod

Call Riverside Turf and place your order. We’ll ask you if you want to pick up your sod yourself or have it delivered and installed. We’ll also ask you a number of questions to time your sod delivery and installation to fit your busy schedule.

Step #3 – Prepare Your Soil

Grade and level the lot, removing all sticks, stones, and breaking up large clumps of earth. Rototill or spade the area to a depth of 4 to 6 inches. Be sure that drainage slopes away from buildings. Then, as needed, rake in fertilizer, lime, peat or compost to a depth of 3 to 4 inches. (For best results, have a qualified service soil test the area to see what type of fertilizer is needed.) Water the prepared area to a depth of 6 inches to settle soil and provide a moist base for turf.

Step #4 – Install Your Turf

Riverside Turf provides you the choice of picking up the sod yourself from our Charles City farm, or having it delivered by our in-house delivery team. Sod is easy to install yourself, or you can ask us about our installation services when placing your order. (In hot weather, protect unlaid turf by placing it in the shade or covering it with moist burlap sacking.) Begin installation along the longest straight line, such as a driveway or sidewalk. Stagger blocks or strips as if laying bricks. Butt edges against each other making sure that roots lie flat in the soil. Avoid gaps or overlaps. Once the lawn is installed, roll the entire area with a lawn roller to improve soil contact and remove air pockets. To ensure that turf stays smooth, avoid heavy use of your lawn for the next three weeks. Within 30 minutes of installation, give your new lawn at least one inch of water. Water daily until turf is firmly rooted, usually within two weeks. The best time to water a new planting is in early afternoon so it will stay moist during the night. After rooting takes place, weather conditions will dictate the amount and frequency of watering.
